Ys X: Nordics (2024) [Switch] critique

1 min read
With the worldwide release of Ys X: Nordics, fans of the long-running series will have a chance to set sail through uncharted but familiar waters.

The nearly 4-decade-old ARPG series takes a turn for the Norse with series protag Adol Christin finding himself inexplicably bound to Viking warrior princess Karja Balta on a quest to root out a fleet of undead creatures terrorizing Obelia Gulf. The game eschews the party system of prior Ys entries, letting players switch between Adol’s swordplay, Karja’s axe-wielding, or combined attacks in Dual mode. All three modes allow for unique charged-up Skill attacks, adding tactical depth & a visual explosion of action & color. Aside from intense combat, players can enjoy seafaring ship battles or relax by fishing. Ys X: Nordics delivers a well-balanced, action-packed experience that will make fans of Tales or Grandia feel anchored in familiar waters.
