MAGE CAST episode #057 – “Quoth the Raven” (Secret of Evermore)

Alchemy and Marty McFly, B-movie references and America in RPGs, why 2 player co-op would be a bad idea, and if it’s really just a Mana clone or if Evermore is worth another look… I’m the Well-Red Mage and this is Mage Cast feat. online video game retailer Gary of joypadlad.com. Here is our Secret of Evermore podcast!

  1. First time listening to a game podcast and I love the discussion. When talking about the music, I remember Jeremy Soule saying he wanted Evermore’s music to be atmospheric. When I was younger, I loved imagining myself as the hero, traveling with a dog (I have never had a dog sadly, but sometimes I’d look at the toaster and imagine it hovering like the robo dog did 😅), casting magic and exploring ancient ruins and fighting monsters. The first time I ever experienced Evermore, I was visiting a Best Buy back when they had multiple game stations to play games at while people shopped around, and I watched a young boy chase after his dog into a huge mansion, then with a huge explosion end up on a space station. At the time I didn’t own a Super Nintendo, but years later after scouring several different game stores, finally found a copy of Secret of Evermore, even finding a game guide I would later order online from Borders Bookstore. I still own both the game and book. And while it is true SquareSoft doesn’t exist anymore and it’s now SquareEnix is here, the fact that Mana, a SquareSoft game still gets mentions, And true because more people played that and knew about it. But I feel like how some games like Earthbound and Shantae, games that formerly unknown due to limited releases just like Evermore and now those two are back and shining bright, I hope one day Evermore can make a comeback too.

Thank you so much for the mention in your podcast and I’m glad to not only be a part of but also enjoy such a wonderful podcast.
