Super Smash Bros (3DS)
Super Smash Bros 3DS wasn’t my first foray into the popular fighting series (Melee on Wii took that honor), but it was the entry that I put the most time into. That’s not saying much, as I’m one in the minority that just can’t seem to “get good” at this series. The controls are simple enough, and if you’ve played one Smash Bros game, you already know how to play others. Nintendo knows how to keep things simple, while adding extra layers of complexity right under the surface for those that want to dig in. Still, my mastery of the controls is limited to basic moves, and floating around the screen hoping the other guy doesn’t 200% me off the side of the screen.
Despite never becoming adept enough to challenge other humans at this game, I can play through the myriad modes, become familiar with the basics with some choice characters, and unlock a ton of content through sheer determination. My addiction to collectibles in games is sated many times over, between the game piece collection, the hidden unlockable characters, and more.
It always surprises me how powerful Mario is, despite all the character choices in this game. I think Mario may have been the first character I cleared the main mode with, despite my intention to finish first with my usual suspects like Donkey Kong or Fox McCloud. Perhaps his mustache hides performance-enhancing mushrooms, or maybe I just got lucky with his special jump attack. Even still, I always find myself returning to this game from time to time to unlock just a few more things in the hopes of possibly becoming just a little bit better.
