31-Day Mage Challenge: Day Twenty-Four – “Most Annoying Video Game Character”

"Who is the Most Annoying Video Game Character?"

31 Day NES Well-Red Cover

For those of you that have hair, these are the characters that made you want to pull it. A voice like fingernails on a chalkboard, or someone with the amount of intelligence as the girl that gets killed in a horror film, these are the worst of the worst…

Who is the Most Annoying Video Game Character?

timemage The Timely Mage

Does every angry troll and snot-nosed brat in multiplayer games count? No? Well there are certainly a lot of irksome characters out there especially in JRPGs where you have a large roster of characters you run into and play. In fact a lot of the time it’s the hero who can be most annoying because they start off really immature and your only hope for sanity is that they grow up before the game ends. While a lot of the Final Fantasy protagonists got probs I’d say Lightning takes the cake. She combines the emo pain-in-the-butt nature of Cloud, the anti-social prudish attitude of Squall, and mixes in her own brand of arrogant irrational stupidity with little-to-no redemption to show for it in the end.

blackmage The Black Humor Mage

Slippy the Toad from Star Fox 64 has to be the most annoying video game character. He is the equivalent of that kid relative who always asks to play Smash Bros. with you, but isn’t good and whines that you have to let him win. Slippy has one of the most annoying voices in video games, he can’t take care of himself, and he complains when you hit one his targets that he takes an eternity to kill. I can’t stand him!

ragemage The Rage Mage

Guys, guys, guys. All of your answers are nothing compared to the soul-deadening, lifeless whine of the hell-fairy known as Navi. It was your own personal condescending tutorial, complete with shrill, grating soundbites. Whenever I hear someone say “Hey, listen!” to this day, it makes me want to force feed myself my own head.Link_Navi_2.png

FF3-NES-Summoner2 The Green Screen Mage

The Riddler in Arkham Knight. I AM PRETTY SURE I HAVE MADE MY FEELINGS CLEAR HERE!!!!!!! The little pest sits and taunts you and taunts you and taunts you. And it’s not even the taunts you can rebut. It’s the lol your stupid cause your stupid trolololol hahahahah I win cause your liek so dumb. Such a dumbhead. It’s just… I can’t handle the type of insulting that has no basis to it and won’t hear any arguments and just is so stupid and he doesn’t stop…

whiteoutmage The White Out Mage

T.T. from Diddy Kong Racing. His voice is really annoying and you hear it throughout the whole game as you’re racing. Well, it’s not so much that he has an annoying voice it’s just his timing is obnoxious, and his repetition make your ears bleed. When you have to do the timed race and beat his sorry butt, he just keeps warning you about time being up (or something like that). Stupid reverb-echo to his voice!

I’ve been tremendously annoyed by Pikachu on the Smash Bros. series of games. You think Kirby is annoying with his taunt-camping “Hiyiyi!”? Pikachu players (most of them I’ve encountered at least) camp in a corner and spam their attacks. This was the worst on the N64 game.Pikachu_Palette_(SSB).png

  1. 1stly, massive HAH! to NEETaku, as Green (Original Flavour!) Yoshi, We are incredible! *does Yoshi Dance from Mario Party 3… Or 4*
But seriously YET AGAIN Lord C has to be the voice of sanity in the darkness.
    GoldenEye. 007 difficulty.
The hacking level. She goes to the computers. The timer starts. Sometime later: -Natalya Has Died- Game Over. Again.
    GYARRRRRGGGHHHHH M*****F***** I’ll **** & **** a **** with a baseball bat ***blaster sin of a *****!!!!!!!!
Ahem! I was mildly annoyed, as you may notice.

  2. I nominate Lankey Kong from Donkey Kong 64. The characters in this game are always simple (the leader, the kid, the sassy girl and the strong one) and Lankey seems to have the personality of an irritating eccentric. He punctuates his movements with annoying sounds, his power (walking on his hands) is hard to control and creates problems, his other powers are unimaginative, his weapon (a blow pipe) is highly impractical and his boss is ruined by bad controls. His round against King K. Rool is also ruined because the attack does not always work and can leave the player vulnerable to attack.
Others include the young Asterite from Ecco the Dolphin (the player has to find him and he kills the player without any explanation of what to do) and Big the Cat from Sonic Adventure (who transforms a fast paced adventure into a fishing simulator). I was interested to see Slippy (who should get extra points because his ability to analyse the enemy’s health is basically blackmail to save him), Navi and characters from Super Smash Brothers.

  3. For me, it’s probably the Spoony Bard himself: Edward from FFIV. He always felt like a nuisance to me and things normally went better if I just left him dead in my party.

  4. Some seriously great answers here! I’m also annoyed by how people spam Pikachu’s Thunder attack in Super Smash Bros. even though I love the character. Rage Mage picked Navi, which would have been my answer, so kudos to you Rage Mage, for being annoyed by a fairy. T.T. is also an interesting choice. I guess I never thought too much about his voice since I hear it so often that I don’t even associate it with him. Unlocking him was certainly annoying though!

Since Navi was already taken, I’ll go with the dog from Duck Hunt. That taunt… that laugh… And then he came back to do it all over again in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, throwing cans in our face and laughing at us…

      1. I can’t those 120+ hours that Riddler took away from FOUR Arkham games. Lol, they were fun to do, but man, I cou;d’ve done soooooo much more. Like save America 3 times over, if I was Jack Bauer.

  5. You’re a top secret agent on an oil facility in the middle of the ocean. Your mission is to infiltrate this stronghold, evade detection by the enemy, and rescue the president.

Helping you on this mission are several experts who you can contact via codec.

    RING RING. RING RING.

“Jack… do you remember what day it is?”

“Rose… I’m kinda in the middle of something.”

“Are you scared to love me, Jack?”

“No, I’m no scared to love you. I’m just busy hiding in a cupboard from armed terrorists who want to kill me.”

“I broke into your room and it was empty. Empty like your heart!”

“Oh for f–k’s sake, I should have just used Tinder…”

  6. Kirby was the worst in Smash. My college roommate would autopick him and just do that cheap “drop people off the edge” move.

Though he is a great all-around character, I got really annoyed at Handsome Jack in Borderlands 2. It got to the point where I would turn off the sound when he talks to you throughout the game.

  7. Aeris in Crisis Core. Oh. My. God. I wanted to impale her right there and then. It’s more of how her character was portrayed and the voice acting, because she’s one of my favorite characters (hell I write about her all the time!). They made her into an absolute twit/Manic Pixie Dream Girl type, and I had to stop playing. Her awful characterization is the reason I didn’t finish the game. Now that it’s years later, it makes me even angrier, because while I understand she was only 17 at the time, she always came off (to me) as someone with a sense of her own destiny/fate, but they had her acting like a twit to be the perfect girl for Zack I guess. Aeris is (arguably) the most important person in the entire story. I just really abhorred her portrayal and the voice acting. Everyone else’s in the game was at least serviceable, but with her, it was like nails on a chalkboard 🙁

Granted if we’re talking about voice acting annoyances Tidus is definitely up there for me, too. Ughhh.

Edward from FFIV is probably my most hated character in the entire series though. Utterly. Useless. I was so annoyed when they had him go out a fight in Fabul instead of taking Rydia or Rosa who were both far more useful! He was such a waste of space.

I feel like such a Negative Nancy lol.

    1. Crisis Core. I always wished I’d played it. Never had the opportunity. Also, I never knew Aeris was so bothersome in it. Thanks for the elucidation. Also… Tidus…! Ugh.

      1. It’s a good game from what I played and definitely helps in my never ending Sephiroth defense crusade 😋 I’m not a lawyer, but if he asked, well…

She was so awful. I’m not the only person who’s mentioned it. I thought it was just me until I found quite a few others.

Tidus laugh scene. All that needs to be said *runs away*

  8. Roman Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV. As one of the characters that gives missions, his are always compulsory, yet completely useless, like going bowling and generally treating menial tasks as if they’re the most important part of the story, when they’re just side-tutorials for the extra features I probably won’t ever play again.

    For example:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qo_9uifCivI

  9. i laughed more than I should XD such a funny post
    i would choose these:
    Jennifer from Rule of Rose
    Fiona from Haunting Ground
    Alyssa from Clock Tower 3
    Hunter from Spyro
    Zippo from Tomba 2
The old man (Butler I guess) from Tomb Raider
